In the west of the Indian Thar desert, close to the Pakistani border, lies the city of Jaisalmer. This city is also called the Golden City, named for it typical yellowish colour due to the use of sandstone. The city consists of a massive fortress (which is one of the largest continous inhabited fortresses in the world) and the market city in front of it.
In the past the city was inhabited by raiders who plundered the trade routes. Later they discovered that trade brought them more wealth and this is when the city developed its fine stone architecture. At the present the city’s importance is only in the field of tourism and its military base due to the proximity to the Pakistani Border. This lack of real economic importance and it’s remoteness in the desert preserved the city’s historical atmosphere.
